Micro and Nanoplastics

A common but not official Definition says, plastic particles greater than 5 mm are macroplastics, microplastics are between 50 µm and 5 mm, nanoplastics are smaller than 100 nm and about 800 times smaller than the diameter of a hair.

Why do this particles matter? - According to a study ("Micro- and nano-plastics in edible fruit and vegetables... "), concentrations of microplastics in vegetables and fruits range from 52,050 to 233,000 particles per gram! Apples have the highest and lettuces the lowest concentrations.

Why our salt is packed with plastic

Despite the unquantified risk from microplastics in salt, salt is essential for life and sea salt tends to have trace minerals.

Microplastics: Rhine one of the most polluted rivers worldwide | EurekAlert! Science News

Between Basel and Rotterdam, the Rhine has one of the highest microplastics pollution so far measured in rivers, with the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area showing peak numbers of up to four times the average. Among investigated rivers, the Rhine is thus among those most heavily polluted with microplastics. This is reported by researchers from the University of Basel. Their results have been published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Patagonia's New Study Finds Fleece Jackets Are a Serious Pollutant | Outside Online

Patagonia recently commissioned a study to find out how many synthetic microfibers—the tiny bits of plastic that marine scientists say could be jeopardizing our oceans (and us)—are being shed from its jackets in the wash. The results aren't pretty.
